Mapping a QTL conferring resistance to Fusarium head blight on chromosome 1B in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) OAK
Nishio, Zenta; Orme, Chihiro; Ito, Miwako; Tabiki, Tadashi; Nagasawa, Koichi; Miura, Hideho.
Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most devastating diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and the development of cultivars with FHB resistance is the most effective way to control the disease. Yumechikara is a Japanese hard red winter wheat cultivar that shows moderate resistance to FHB with superior bread-making quality. To identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for FHB resistance in Yumechikara, we evaluated doubled haploid lines derived from a cross between Yumechikara and a moderate susceptible cultivar, Kitahonami, for FHB resistance in a 5-year field trial, and we analyzed polymorphic molecular markers between the parents. Our analysis of these markers identified two FHB-resistance QTLs, one from Yumechikara and one from Kitahonami. The...

Modélisation de la résistance aux chocs de salinité des postlarves de Penaeus vannamei ArchiMer
Aquacop, Aquacop; Le Moullac, Gilles; Damez, D.
The notion of penaeid shrimp postlarvae quality, which implies a survival potential, is still a subjective parameter. The zootechnical criteria and the visual observations are not sufficient to evaluate the physiological condition of the hatchery reared postlarvae. The resistance of postlarvae to salinity shocks is a representative criteria of their condition. The goal of this study is to present a non-linear regression model at 2 variables (size, salinity) for the P. vannamei postlarvae resistance to salinity shocks. Between the second and the twentieth day after metamorphosis; 5 salinity shocks (20, 15, 10, 5 and 20/00) were tested daily, each one with 50 postlarvae. Survival rates were recorded after 2 hrs. Concurrently, the postlarvae growth in the...

Alves,Rodrigo P; Blank,Arie F; Oliveira,Alisson Marcel S; Santana,Aléa Dayane D; Pinto,Vanderson S; Andrade,Thiago M.
ABSTRACT Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) spreads mainly by vegetative propagation, and therefore this vegetable may have duplicate accessions in germplasm banks. The authors aimed to characterize morpho-agronomically the sweet potato germplasm from the Active Germplasm Bank (AGB) of Universidade Federal de Sergipe (UFS).The experiment was carried out at the Research Farm “Campus Rural da UFS”. The experimental design was a randomized block design, testing 73 sweet potato accessions with two replicates and four plants per plot. Morpho-agronomic traits of aboveground part and roots were evaluated. We observed that the leaf lobe type, the number of lobes per leaf, shape of central lobe, and general leaf shape were traits which provided the most variability...

Morphological analysis and DNA methylation in Conyza bonariensis L. cronquist (Asteraceae) phenotypes Bragantia
Paula,Juliana Maria de; Pinto-Maglio,Cecília Alzira Ferreira; Pinto,Luciana Rossini.
ABSTRACT The species Conyza bonariensis (L.) cause losses in agriculture due to their invasive capacity and resistance to herbicides like glyphosate. The species of this genus exhibit phenotypic plasticity, which complicates their identification and characterization. Thus, experiments were performed with 2 extreme C. bonariensis phenotypes (called broad leaf and narrow leaf) in greenhouse conditions and in the laboratory, in order to verify if the morphological differences among these phenotypes are a genetic character or result from environmental effects. In addition to the comparative morphological analysis, assessment of DNA methylation profile was performed to detect the occurrence, or not, of differences in the epigenetic level. The morphological...

New multilocus sequence typing of MRSA in São Paulo, Brazil BJMBR
Carmo,M.S.; Inoue,F.; Andrade,S.S.; Paschoal,L.; Silva,F.M.; Oliveira,V.G.S.; Pignatari,A.C.C..
An increased incidence of nosocomial and community-acquired infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been observed worldwide. The molecular characterization of MRSA has played an important role in demonstrating the existence of internationally disseminated clones. The use of molecular biology methods in the surveillance programs has enabled the tracking of MRSA spread within and among hospitals. These data are useful to alert nosocomial infection control programs about the potential introduction of these epidemic clones in their areas. Four MRSA blood culture isolates from patients hospitalized at two hospitals in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed; one of them was community acquired. The isolates were...

Not All Roads Lead to Resilience: a Complex Systems Approach to the Comparative Analysis of Tortoises in Arid Ecosystems Ecology and Society
Leuteritz, Thomas E. J.; Redlands Institute; thomas_leuteritz@redlands.edu; Ekbia, Hamid R.; Redlands Institute;.
The concept of resilience has been widely used in the study of social-ecological systems, with its key components identified as resistance, latitude, and precariousness. We use this concept to examine the differences among three semi-arid regions in terms of these three components. We do this by examining the status of tortoises that occur in the dry spiny forest Madagascar, the Karoo of South Africa, and the Mojave Desert of the United States as an indicator of the health and resilience of their respective ecosystems. Our findings demonstrate the tight coupling between societal development and ecosystem dynamics, the role of diversity in enhancing resilience, and the significance of local communal knowledge in sustaining it. Our findings also suggest that...

Physical-mechanical properties of multinutrient blocks with different binders for goats and sheep intake AGRIAMBI
Furtado,Dermeval A.; Castro,Thiago B. de S.; Lopes Neto,Jose P.; Constantino,Rodrigo A.; Cunha,Maria das G. G.; Nascimento,José W. B. do.
ABSTRACT Feed supplementation with multinutrient blocks (MB) for sheep and goats can be a viable alternative in the Brazilian semiarid region, and it is necessary to set an ideal hardness to obtain maximum feed efficiency. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the manufacture of MB using five binders: Portland cement, lime, kaolin, Portland cement + kaolin and lime + bentonite, at two percentages (7.5 and 10%) and two healing times (72 and 96 h). The experimental design was completely randomized in a 5 x 2 x 2 factorial scheme (binders, percentages and healing times, respectively), with five repetitions. Using lime in the MBs led to greater resistance in the specimens (208.53 kPa), as well as the greater percentage of binders (10%), ensuring higher...
